What is the Internet?

The Internet is a global system which consists of interrelated computer networks. It is a grid of networks from a local to global scope such as private, public, academic, business, and government networks. The Internet conveys a wide range of data, resources and services. All of the networks which the Internet contains are linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies.

Nowadays, the Internet is a public, cooperative and self-sustaining facility accessible to hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

The Internet has empowered and accelerated new methods of personal interactions through IM (instant messaging), Internet forums, and social networking. The most traditional communications media (such as the telephone, radio, television, paper mail and newspapers) are being redesigned, reformed, or even bypassed by the Internet, giving birth to new services such as email, Internet telephone, Internet television, online music, digital newspapers, and video streaming websites.
